Chapter Eleven

“Huh?”

Okay, not the most intelligent thing to ever come out of my mouth. But other than Bubbe Ling speaking to her dead husband, I thought I was the only ghost whisperer around.

Benton placed his hands flat on the table and stood. He shook his head, disappointment on his face. “I can’t deal with this, Georgie. You should go.”

“No, wait.” I got to my feet and came around to his side of the table. “What do you mean, ‘you too’? Who else says they talk to dead people?”

“Does it matter?” He started to move past me to the door. Knowing him, he’d politely throw me out of the building or call the nearest psych hospital. Or worse, my parents.

I grabbed his arm to stop him. “Chris, please. Listen to me.”

Gently, he removed my hand from his arm and held both my wrists in his large hands. Sincerity and—oh, geez—pity filled his eyes. “You’re a good person, Georgie. You want to believe your friend’s death was more than what it seems because it was a terrible way for her to go. But it was an accident. You can’t talk to her.”

I yanked my hands out of his. “Please spare me the grief counseling, Sergeant. I can see her and hear her. And it wasn’t an accident.”

He raised an eyebrow. “Because she says so.”

“Yes, and because it makes sense.”

“How do you figure?” He crossed his arms over his chest and waited for a logical answer. An answer that defied the known evidence.

“Min met Chou that night, seeking information on a story that involves the Iron Lotus. That was why the names I gave you made you so worried.”

Chris’s lips compressed into a tight line. “Now you understand why I didn’t want you poking around in this.”

Nothing in his eyes or on his face told me he’d warned me because he cared or because he was part of the poaching ring. Unlike Ted, he was probably an excellent poker player.

“I know that now,” I said, nodding.

“But just because Min was investigating the story doesn’t mean the Triad was responsible for her death.”

“But it doesn’t rule them out.”

The challenge in his eyes softened. His voice was quiet when he spoke. “There has to be more than that.”

There was more. I knew there was. I just had to find it.

“The tape and the notes will help prove it,” I said. “And the thumb drive Felix Chou gave Min that night.”

Chris’s eye narrowed. “How do you know she was given a thumb drive?”

I swallowed hard. Did I dare tell him we’d talked to Chou just an hour ago? Admitting I’d met with his supposedly anonymous contact—possibly a main suspect in Min’s death—was going to cause more trouble for everyone. But the idea of lying to Chris made my chest hurt.

“Felix Chou—”

“Yeah, he met with her that night,” Chris said, interrupting my confession. “Even if it was him, there’s still no proof she was murdered. I need evidence, Georgie.”

I knew he couldn’t just take my word for it.
